I carry a notebook and a pen (or pencil) everywhere I go. I’ve tried to write notes on my phone but for me it is not the same, I like the freedom pen on paper can offer.
I can underline, scribble out, doodle, and even if I cross something out it is still there. When I get an idea for a design it is normally while my mind is wandering. Whether that is on the tube, on the train, or while watching TV.
Having a notebook on me at all times has taught me not underestimate myself, that little doodle I made 3 months ago, or that phrase I scribbled down last week will be useful at some point in the future.
My trusty notebook stays with me when I am asleep; it has a special place right under my pillow. This is not due to some kind or superstition or preciousness, just the apparent timing of my brain activity. It may just be me but I find that the moment I close my eyes, my brain wakes up. And after using techniques like counting sheep, and imagining posting a countless number of envelopes. I decided write down all the things whizzing around my mind, and as if by magic my brain begin to relax and slow down.
What I am trying to say is that, luckily I have found a way to do what I love to do, which is design, in away that is not stressful. Personally I think that is very important, find something that you love and that works for you.
